ABOUT VIELA HU
fish heads, cracked eggs, and paint tubes scattered about summarizes her creative process
A Chinese-Canadian artist, Viela seeks to evoke the fantastical through reality. She centers her practice on mixed media and video art, the freedom of which allows her to conjure nonexistent spaces, vacuums open to all possibilities. In these spaces of isolation and imagination, she finds connection between juxtaposing elements. Those that recur are the female body, its power, malleability and mutated abnormalities has forever been a site of fascination for her, floras and faunas, as well as quotidien amenities like bug-sprays. Through these strange, dream-like visions of interconnectedness, she navigates the confusing relationships between herself and all that is beyond her in her life, seeking to grasp living in its inconstancy. Art circumvents language and is a way for her to document her shifting perspectives and fleeting thoughts. Working to metamorphose from the mundane to the chimerical, her art seeks to leap from a small point of entrance to a cosmic panorama of exploring the changing world.
