Art Masters, hosted by Vancouver Visual Art Foundation, is a public live-art competition featuring a random theme and a mystery box of tools for artists to create with. The artists have an hour to respond to the prompt. Meanwhile, he audience is invited to vote and auction for their favourite painting, and the artist with the highest number of votes or auction wins. For my year, the theme was "safe spaces", and in my mystery box, I got some Q-Tips, tissues, a plate, a knife, and liquid acrylic paint of blue, white, black, yellow and pink.

THE ART

When I first heard the prompt "safe space", I blanked out on what I should paint since I had no brushes or pencils for sketch. I started by putting down colours that remind me of a safe space, which gradually developed into a sunrise, a place of hope.

It was a very thrilling experience to be the youngest of all the participants, to create with professional artists, to stand under the public's eye, and to create with pressure and limitations, but also to break these constraints, both the ones posed by others and the internal boundaries I have. Art Masters competition was a sunrise to a new journey.
