In the face of inevitable death, what is the meaning of life? I answered: although all mortals have the same ending, we don’t have the same story, and this epic is what makes our living meaningful. My response can be seen in Book of Life, where I drew the life of a little girl into a continuous narrative. I used ink to create a re-edition of traditional Chinese paintings. Throughout the story, I incorporated elements of classical gardens from my hometown Suzhou. Metamorphosis is the central theme of this book: the seasons shift as lotus and plum blossoms bloom and wilt. I also designed a fish that grows wings and transforms into an egret, a symbol of freedom in Chinese literature. The fish represents a playful childhood, while the egret suggests the departure of soul from the mortal world. The book is constructed in an unconventional way, one that folds towards different directions, portraying the many pathways and new experiences in this journey of life.In the face of inevitable death, what is the meaning of life?
