A pig dissection project in AP Biology led to my reflection of death, how once the soul has left the body, the organism is only a mere empty vessel left to decay over time. I chose a metal tray as my background, conveying that the dead body is cold and lonely. The dried flowers, its warm colour contrasting with the grey background, is a visual metaphor of the lingering life left. On top of the flowers lay a dove, which I chose to create a contrast between the bird's association with life to its bare bones and decaying feathers, rigid and still. Yet, there is still a sense of warmth on the dead bird’s chest, a fleeting moment before its soul departs the physical world. I used colour-pencil to create a contrast between a medium that is often associated with childhood drawing with the subject of death, suggesting the inevitable end of all life as the soul leaves for a transcendent realm, and the empty body left to decay in the mortal world.
