FLOWER WOMB
2022
various sizes
mixed media

As I metamorphosed from girlhood into womanhood, I was deeply intrigued by the physical and psychological changes during this time, which I explored through creating sculptures inspired by Tiffanie Turner and Georgia O’Keeffe. I chose peony for my Chinese identity and fasciated ones so they appear like the uterus. Each peony is designed to reflect one theme. To the left, a blue bud peaks out of a pink blossom, implying my curiosity for the world. In the centre, two white peonies bloom back to back, like an explosion of power that drove puberty, and to the right, a bright pink flower with two buds resembling ovaries, symbolizes discovery of sexuality. Interactive in nature, the viewer can wear the flower sculpture and feel the textures inside, from silicon to yarn and pom-pom, alluding to the inner chamber of the womb, a space for the viewer to reflect on their own puberty, an intimate, timeless universe of the youthful soul within a peony.

PROCESS

To metamorphose my abstract, intangible thoughts into visible art, I go through stages of idea development, research, experimentation, and finalization. Here, I brainstorm on the topic of youth. I also research artists and writers who create on similar themes of femininity, sexuality, and growth. After researching, I devised a rough sketch of an idea: to create three large peony sculptures with hollowed interiors for viewers to view both the physical and psychological changes during youth.
