Mass media misleads me to overthink the beauty of life to be full of glory. Stirred by the grotesque imagery of David LaChapelle and Maisie Cousins, I used a magazine cover in the background to reveal the subtle influence of the media. I arranged a bouquet, pearl necklace, glass, lipsticks, and a bronze statue of Victory Nike to portray the romanization of life, then contrasting it with items that are often deemed disgusting or trivial but are essential aspects of life, such as fish heads and chicken feet. I photographed various versions of the still life for the most suitable composition. I chose to paint the still life as a further elevation and aestheticization of living. When painting, I studied the works of Caravaggio and Rachel Ruysch to better use complementary colours and varied tones for realism, ultimately conveying the struggle between an expectation for a splendid life and the reality of living, a truth that is neither ugly nor glorified.
