As movements like Black Lives Matter and Stop Asian Hate arose, I seek to critically examine and question calls for diversity. They seem like a bandage that merely conceals the scars of racism: although more BIPOC are appearing on mass-media, deep down, our prejudice and cultural clashes are tearing the wounds ever wider.

I photographed hands of students, teachers, and janitors at my school. I adjusted my camera into monochrome: the black and white images only denote the skins’ different values, not colour. What adds colour to these black and white photos are our prejudice, our biased instinct to assign a race and a stereotype to even the smallest indication of a human being.

I then collaged these photos into a video. The hands flashes in a grid, their values blend together into a single grey square. The differences between each race is then reduced into a commonality: they are all humans.
